Officially starting the Can to Can Journey

On 16th June 2022, at Sheraton Saigon Hotel, the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding on the implementation of the Can-to-Can (Can-to-Can) closed recycling project between the Communication Center took place. Natural Resources and Environment Communication – Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Lagom Vietnam company, TBC-BALL Vietnam company, Anglo Asia company (Thailand) and UACJ company (Thailand). Through this event, the first five members officially kicked off the Can to Can journey, opening a new page in the field of aluminum cans recycling in Vietnam.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Vu Minh Ly – Deputy Director of the Center for Communication of Natural Resources and Environment – Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment said: “The closed-loop Can – to – Can recycling project (“Can – to – Can”) is an interesting demonstration of the circular economy model. The self-contained “Cans-In-Cans” recycling project was established to address the recycling potential of Used Beverage Can (UBC) aluminum beverage cans in Southeast Asia. Cans are already the most widely recycled beverage containers in the world, at 69% globally, 76% in Europe, rising to 99% in Germany. The project aims to increase the recycling rate of cans in Vietnam, to increase the level of recycled aluminum content available in cans and to create consumer awareness about the benefits of recycling and its contribution. it’s for the circular economy. The recycled aluminum used to make cans uses 95% less energy than virgin aluminum.

The pilot project aims to collect 620 tons in a year, equivalent to 50 million used beverage cans in Ho Chi Minh City, for recycling and new cans. Lagom Vietnam Joint Stock Company is handling the collection, whereby Lagom will start collecting UBCs at restaurants, then send the guaranteed UBCs to Anglo Asia Group (Thailand) for disposal. paint and chop. From there, UACJ (Thailand) Co., Ltd. will manufacture the aluminum can sheet and eventually send it to TBC-Ball Beverage Can to produce the next generation of aluminum beverage cans from the same metal.

This can-to-can recycling brings many benefits to the environment, society and country as the used aluminum cans will be collected for recycling into new cans. Besides, this practice will save and protect resources and reduce energy. In addition, it also reduces carbon emissions, reduces the amount of waste going to landfills and creates a green, clean and beautiful environment for Vietnam.

A closed recycling cycle of aluminum cans is carried out as follows:

• The Center for Communication of Natural Resources and Environment is responsible for providing legal and professional guidance and support; Public communication organization to encourage consumers to use, sort and store aluminum cans properly.
• Lagom Vietnam Company is the direct planning unit; investment in facilities and infrastructure; apply technology and arrange human resources to expand the collection network. Aluminum cans collected from the community are gathered at Lagom Vietnam’s Waste Sorting Centers. Here all aluminum cans are pressed tightly into blocks for storage. These blocks are then exported to Thailand and transported to Anglo Asia for further processing. All collected data is recorded and stored fully, accurately and transparently to track the path of waste.
• Anglo Asia Company conducts treatment to remove paint and impurities remaining in the material, forming raw aluminum in the form of ingots or aluminum chips pressed into sheets to be sent to UACJ (Thailand).
• UACJ company refines raw aluminum into pure aluminum, meeting quality standards to produce aluminum cans for beverages. Pure aluminum is produced into finished aluminum coils, these aluminum coils are exported to Vietnam, transported to TBC-BALL company.
• TBC-BALL Company uses aluminum coils to produce new aluminum cans for the market.

Thus, a new generation of aluminum cans was born from used old cans in a closed cycle.
